The Coffeeshop

You will find Coffeeshop Smokey on the biggest square in Amsterdam at the Rembrandtplein. Rembrandtplein was used to be called Reguliersmarkt, where Amsterdam's butter market was found. In 1876 the square was renamed in honour of the Dutch master in the centre of the gardens here, gazing in the direction of the Jewish Quarter. Although there is no market, it is probably the centre of more commercial activity now than ever before, with cafes, bars, hotels and restaurants on all sides.
Once you're on Rembrandtplein it's hard to overlook Coffeeshop Smokey, it's clear: we're not talking about some dark obscure coffeeshop in a back alley. Once you've walked in you will find a very friendly atmosphere in what looks like a regular, huge, bar.
The English understanding of the word coffeeshop suggests a place open during the day serving afternoon tea and cakes, but in the Netherlands it denotes the kind of place gran would sniff at: the hashand marijuana bar or 'smoking' coffeeshop. Coffeeshop Smokey has over 150 seats on two floors. You can just sit down after a long day in the city and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea, play a game on one of our five pooltables or drink a beer, but most people will find it hard not to walk up to the beautiful glass counter and have a look at the immense selection of marihuana, hashish, mushrooms, herbal XTC's, rolling paper, pipes, rolling machines etc. etc.
Whether you're buying just a single prerolled joint, buying stuff to roll your own at your table, or you just want to take a look: Don't be afraid, it's all perfectly legal, all the merchandize is clearly displayed under a big glass counter and our friendly staff is willing to answer all the questions you might have.
